Note for Parents: COPPA Updated
The FTC has issued its update of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA) – the first revision since 2013, and we KNOW the online environment has changed drastically since then. As usual, the rule will take effect 60 days after it is published in the Federal Register, which is expected very soon. It protects the personal information of children under the age of 13.
Key provisions are the following:
Parental consent is required before children’s data can be shared with 3rd parties for advertising;
Once the original consent-for purpose is completed, the data must be deleted, not retained.
11 separate data points are regulated in compliance with the rule.
Additional fine points are also present in the final version.
Additional note: The FTC has filed a complaint against Snapchat regarding safety for young users.
