New DC Wage Transparency and Wage History Requirements Coming
Effective June 30 (assuming Congressional approval), DC will enact a strict transparency law, amending the 2014 “DC Wage Transparency Act.” The new requirements apply to all non-governmental employers in Washington, DC. The act requires that all job postings and advertisements must contain the minimum and maximum pay rates for the position; it also prohibits questions about applicants’ pay history. A workplace poster will be required.
States that have pay transparency laws in place are Illinois, New York, Rhode Island, Washington State, California and Hawaii.
States with pending transparency laws (so far, besides DC) are Massachusetts, Michigan and New Jersey. The Federal Government will have a salary history ban in place by October of this year, and there is a proposal underway to extend that to all federal contractors and subcontractors.
